Introduction

This is a short article on what to do if your IP is incorrectly geolocated. Let's say you have a server in our Denmark DC but a site like whatismyipaddress.com or an online music service (while you're on a VPN) shows you are in the UAE or somewhere else, so in these cases what can you do? 

So What Can You Do?

The Geolocation information is updated regularly by some GeoIP databases - these keep track of the geolocation of the IPs of servers running worldwide. This information is used by many other services, one example is the online music platforms.

We, at Webdock, extensively use MaxMind for these GeoIP lookups and many services online use Maxmind for their geolocation services. If Maxmind shows correct geolocation, chances are most services in the world will correctly geolocate your IP. Using this tool can do a lookup to see where your server IP is located according to Maxmind:

Here, a Denmark IP should show that it is located in Denmark. This information is updated regularly and in almost all cases you'd see the correct information. If it shows otherwise, ie maybe like some other location, contact Webdock Support and we can request Maxmind to update the information.

If you use some other GeoIP provider where you see the IP information is not correct, then it is likely out-of-date information. Ping us regarding this and we'll do our best to get the database in question updated.

However, if you are not checking on some GeoIP website specifically but just seeing the wrong location in "some system" then that system is using an out-of-date database. In such a scenario, you'll need to contact the support team of this system and ask them to update it, or inform you which database they are using so Webdock support can request an update.
